What is the most important lesson you want your children or other young people in your life to learn before adulthood?
¿Cuál es aquella importante lección de vida que usted quisiera que su hijo (o aquella persona importante en su vida) aprendiera antes de llegar a la edad adulta?
Be humble. There is a phrase that Mexicans say, “if you don’t live to serve, you don’t serve to live,” or “if you don’t live to serve, it’s not worth living.” Something like that.
Se humilde. Hay una frase que los mexicanos dicen, “si no vives para servir, no sirves para vivir”, o “si no vives para servir, no vale la pena vivir”. Algo como eso.
Why is this work for our children and our community so important to you?
Para Usted, ¿Por qué considera este trabajo importante para nuestros hijos y nuestra comunidad?
First of all, by knowing the education system, that way I can help my children and other immigrant parents just like us to be able to help their children. And to be able to fight for equal education for all regardless of color, race and sex!
Primero que nada, conociendo el sistema educativo, de esa manera puedo ayudar a mis hijos y otros padres inmigrantes como nosotros a poder ayudar a sus hijos. ¡Y poder luchar por la igualdad de educación para todos sin importar el color, la raza y el sexo!
Where do you lead/serve in the community?

I am a mother like everyone else, I am not ashamed of my color, race, and language, that I do not speak English perfectly, but I have had the opportunity to represent thousands of parents like me in Washington D.C. and I would like to show that we all have the same ability, the same courage, and the same goal! To fight to improve the education of our children!

How has COVID-19 changed your everyday parenting and education?
De que manera COVID ha cambiado su dia a dia en la crianza y educación de sus hijos?
It changed our lives totally. It was very frustrating the first months, but I learned to value my children, to help them, especially my son who has learning disabilities. I gave him the quality time that I had not given him before, which made him improve in his academic development and his self-esteem soared.
Ha cambiado nuestras vidas por completo. Fue muy frustrante los primeros meses, pero aprendí a valorar a mis hijos, a ayudarlos, especialmente a mi hijo que tiene dificultades de aprendizaje . Le di el tiempo de calidad que no le había dado antes, lo que le hizo mejorar en su desarrollo académico y su autoestima mejoró muchísimo .
What have you learned as a parent about your children and family in this pandemic?
Que ha aprendido como padre sobre sus hijos y su familia en esta pandemia?
Life gives us proof of change and respect. We were able to realize that such a small virus can kill rich and poor people, white and brown people. We are all the same and we need to change to be stronger. To value family, food, life, to love each other more. Also, personal hygiene, food at home, and in schools is important. The amount of sugar and fats that are given to children as lunch and snacks are ridiculous. If there is not a good diet, the defenses will be low and open more infections for all.
La vida nos dio una prueba de cambio y respeto. Pudimos darnos cuenta de que un virus tan pequeño puede matar a ricos y pobres, blancos y morenos. Nos dimos cuenta que todos somos iguales y necesitamos cambiar para ser más fuertes. Valorar la familia, la comida, la vida, querernos más. Además, la higiene personal, la comida en el hogar y en las escuelas es importante. La cantidad de azúcar y grasas que se les da a los niños como almuerzo y merienda en las escuelas públicas es ridícula. Si no hay una buena alimentación, no hay un buen aprendizaje, con tantas azúcares en los alimentos procesados que se ofrecen en las escuelas hay un nivel de defensas bajo, energía baja, y como consecuencia cualquier virus puede afectar.
Has the lack of person to person interaction affected your family in regards to education and family life?
De qué manera la falta de interacción personal ha afectado a sus familias en lo que respecta a la educación y la vida familiar?
It has affected us in education and in the social emotional part with depression in children and in parents. Personally, my children do not want to go back to school anymore, My daughter became lonely. She has anxiety and no friends. I have never before experienced that feeling of seeing my daughter go out on the street and begin to shake and sweat. Now each time, there’s a group of people, this happens. As a mother, I can tell you that it is horrible to see my daughter like this.
Si nos ha afectado en la educación y en la parte socio emocional, con depresión en niños y padres. Personalmente, mis hijos ya no quieren volver a la escuela, mi hija se sintió sola. Tiene ansiedad y no tiene amigos. Nunca antes había experimentado esa sensación de ver a mi hija salir a la calle y comenzar a temblar y sudar. Ahora, cada vez que hay un grupo de personas, esto le sucede. Como madre, puedo decirte que es horrible ver a mi hija así.
Now that your children are at home doing remote learning, do you have a newfound respect for teachers?
Ahora que sus hijos están en casa aprendiendo a distancia, siente más respeto o simpatía por los maestros?
Yes, the work that teachers do is often that of teachers, mentors, and for many children, even parents. They see them more hours than their own parents!

What part has racism and inequity played in your education?

As a Latina I have experienced racism in various ways, because of my skin color and height, because of the way I speak English and even the way I dress, including my own race and in my country.

Who was your favorite teacher or movie growing up and why?

My favorite show was Doogie Howser, who was a genius kid, who was already a Dr. being a young man. That seemed so interesting to me and the small group of young people that we usually got together and always wanted to get the best grades. Something that I learned was that at the end of each scene he wrote in his diary what was happening in his life. It was a habit that I put into practice and it helped me in my adolescence.
Mi programa favorito era el de Doogie Howser quien era un niño genio, que siendo un joven ya era un Dr. Eso me parecía tan interesante y siempre el grupito de jóvenes que usualmente nos juntábamos queríamos sacar las mejores notas. Algo que aprendí que al final de cada escena escribía en su diario lo que pasaba en su vida, y fue un hábito que yo puse en práctica y me ayudó en mi adolescencia.
