What is the most important lesson you want your children or other young people in your life to learn before adulthood?

I need, we need our children to know that they are loved. That they have great potential. To know kindness and respect, discipline, courage, and responsibility. For me, I also include how to defend yourself, how to fire a weapon, how to grow food and prepare it, how to manage money. And last but by no means least, how to build strong, lasting relationships.

Why is this work for our children and our community so important to you?

For me, getting involved is my responsibility, a commitment to make positive change, for my son, your son. our family. I do it because of my struggles, the struggles of my father, and his before him, and his before him. I am involved because I know that the margin of error and opportunity is so small that I must do something to help.

Where do you lead/serve in the community?

I’m a ” Football Dad” with a college-age son who is a student athlete. I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the process of college recruiting. The camps and training, college visits. doing all this you get to meet parents with the same issues and possibilities. In that space as parents we find that no one person does it alone. We share info on schools, academics, policy, and discipline at school.

How has COVID-19 changed your everyday parenting and education?

I think the better question is “what do we want to keep” about the system we have as we move forward. I believe a change is needed in how history is taught, and what it teaches. I believe a change is needed regarding the cost of quality education, or the fact that there is even a distinction in education, referred to as “quality” associated “cost”. Teachers deserve more, our kids deserve more.

What have you learned as a parent about your children and family in this pandemic?

The pandemic has required a lot. A lot of patience, with myself and others. Finding a ” new normal” and what that looks like. Looking forward to the summer. We have adapted fairly well in normalizing the changes. This helped stress to be lowered. I’ve learned to trust what we have taught and encouraged in our son. One of those lesson is “ You Can if You Do.”

Has the lack of person to person interaction affected your family in regards to education and family life?

My son is in college. He should have been at school. But we are grateful he is home. It has been a bit of an issue for him, but so far so good as he looks forward to maybe getting back on campus.

Now that your children are at home doing remote learning, do you have a newfound respect for teachers?

Teachers have always deserved much more than they get.

What part has racism and inequity played in your education?

The effect of racism and the effect of inequity both had a profound impact on me. I attended Kent, Auburn and Tahoma school districts in the 70’s graduating in 81. I never met or saw a teacher or any staff that looked like me. I was harassed and terrorized at school with little to no punishment for those responsible. But to stand up for myself against the onslaught of abuses, I faced harsh punishment. Today I do this work With the Road Map Project as a Parent Leader because of my experience.

Who was your favorite teacher or movie growing up and why?

The most impactful teacher I had was Mr. Jimmy Dunn. He was a high school history teacher and the soccer coach. I never had him as a teacher in the classroom, but I learned much from him on the field. Sportsmanship, leadership, courage, and restraint. He was the only person I knew who had been to Africa. Although I joined the USMC shortly after high school, Coach Dunn was the only teacher in the school who encouraged me to pursue higher education. I think he had a lot of empathy for me and understood what I was dealing with and he would frequently pull me aside and show interest in my future. He was of great support in some hard times for me. Thank you Mr Jimmy Dunn ” Coach”.

Gracias, Sr. Jimmy Dunn “Entrenador”.
