What is the most important lesson you want your children or other young people in your life to learn before adulthood?
¿Cuál es aquella importante lección de vida que usted quisiera que su hijo (o aquella persona importante en su vida) aprendiera antes de llegar a la edad adulta?
Understand that life will not hand you everything on a silver platter; you have to work for everything you want. Also, treating everyone like you want to be treated is a tool that will take you a long way in life.
Entiendo que la vida no te entregará todo en bandeja de plata; tienes que trabajar por todo lo que quieras. Además, tratar a todos como si quisieran que lo traten a usted es una herramienta que lo llevará por un largo camino en la vida.
Why is this work for our children and our community so important to you?

This work of advocating for people of color is extremely important. I want to speak up for people who are not able to speak up. I want to be a part of the change regarding how our children are viewed and treated in school, which in the long run will help our families.

RMP PLT (Road Map Project Parent Leadership Team), SPEB (Supporting Partnerships in Education & Beyond), PSESD (Puget Sound Educational School District): Transformation Collaboration & RAC, and UW Fellows Community conversation.
Right now, I am most connected to my community with SPEB. I am connected to SPEB because I have a closer reach to my community. My partners are other parents who are ready to help with the fight. I received my information from many different locations.

How has COVID-19 changed your everyday parenting and education?

Since COVID-19 started, I have changed the way I parent. I am now a full-time teacher and counselor. My parenting style has become tougher and has more lessons on life than before.

What have you learned as a parent about your children and family in this pandemic?

I know that my child is a fan of science. My daughter is a protector and wants to protect everyone in her life. My family and village around me are everything to me and that I want to make sure that they are safe at all times.

Has the lack of person to person interaction affected your family in regards to education and family life?

Person to person interaction has affected my household in so many ways. We have not been able to get out and see certain family members and it has affected our health in many different ways.

Now that your children are at home doing remote learning, do you have a newfound respect for teachers?

I have always appreciated teachers. Now that my child is home doing remote learning, my respect and appreciation is stronger.

What part has racism and inequity played in your education?

Since I am a black woman, inequity and racism has been a part of my education. I would not be the woman I am without the hard aches that I have endured. Inequity and racism in education has pushed me towards greatness in education.

Who was your favorite teacher or movie growing up and why?

My favorite teacher was Mr. Tate, my gym teacher. Mr. Tate taught me to be strong and courageous in everything I do. With determination, anything can be achieved. Mr. Tate will always be a teacher who showed me the true meaning of being a stand-up person.
