What is the most important lesson you want your children or other young people in your life to learn before adulthood?
¿Cuál es aquella importante lección de vida que usted quisiera que su hijo (o aquella persona importante en su vida) aprendiera antes de llegar a la edad adulta?
I want my kids to know that life is full of challenges and obstacles—but with love, sympathy, perseverance, and knowledge, the sky is their limit.
Quiero que mis hijos sepan que la vida está llena de desafíos y obstáculos, pero con amor, simpatía, perseverancia y conocimiento, el cielo es su límite.
Why is this work for our children and our community so important to you?

This work for our children and our community is important to me because we have to show the newer generations that standing up and working together can result in better community unity.
Este trabajo para nuestros niños y nuestra comunidad es importante para mí porque tenemos que mostrarles a las nuevas generaciones que ponerse de pie y trabajar juntos puede resultar en una mejor unidad comunitaria.

I have participated and/or lead in the following capacities: Parent Leadership Team, Community Cafe Collaborative, Puget Sound Education Service District Transformative Collaborate Team, Representative, Girl Scouts, Ancestral Flame Feedings, In It Together, PTSA.

How has COVID-19 changed your everyday parenting and education?
De que manera COVID ha cambiado su dia a dia en la crianza y educación de sus hijos?
COVID-19 has only changed the time and place of certain educational elements. COVID has not changed how I parent.

What have you learned as a parent about your children and family in this pandemic?
Que ha aprendido como padre sobre sus hijos y su familia en esta pandemia?
As a parent, I’ve learned about my kids’ weaknesses as well as new skills they’re gaining at home. Unfortunately, we have to adjust to this new lifestyle, losing friends, new habits, and much more.

Has the lack of person to person interaction affected your family in regards to education and family life?

Our family has always been close. We are still doing everything we did before COVID-19 put a halt on things. We have learned how to make a way out of no way. In education, my son wanted to attend class via Zoom. The lack of person-to-person interaction was a blessing for us.

Now that your children are at home doing remote learning, do you have a newfound respect for teachers?

My respect for teachers has not changed. I have always respected teachers. Did I like what some teachers were doing, no, but the respect has always been there.

What part has racism and inequity played in your education?

Inequity played a part in my college planning. There were less opportunities for a single Black mom to get grants and scholarships according to my entrance counselor. That was also a part of the racism sector of the situation because I asked another person and they told me something completely different. The helpful person also told me the person before was racist.
La desigualdad jugó un papel en mi planificación universitaria. Había menos oportunidades para que una madre negra soltera obtuviera subsidios y becas, según mi consejero de ingreso. Eso también era parte del sector racista de la situación porque le pregunté a otra persona y me dijeron algo completamente diferente. Who was your favorite teacher or movie growing up and why?

My third grade teacher was my first favorite teacher. Her name is Mrs. Moreo. I told her I would always remember her name because her name was oreo with a “M”. She was my favorite teacher because she didn’t make me feel like I should be singled out because I was the only Black girl in the class.
Mi maestra de tercer grado fue mi primera maestra favorita. Su nombre es Sra. Moreo. Le dije que siempre recordaría su nombre porque su nombre era oreo con una “M”. Ella era mi maestra favorita porque no me hizo sentir que debería ser señalada porque yo era la única chica negra en la clase.
